When I was newly married, I had a best friend that I talked to on the phone all the time. Usually we talked while we were making dinner, doing the dishes or cleaning the house, which seemed to be all the time! I got to know her so well that I knew what she was thinking. I remember playing charades with some other friends and when we were on the same team, we were unbeatable!
Have you ever noticed after hanging out with people for a long time, you start to sound like them and know what they’re thinking? Good friends or spouses can pick up on each other’s lingo, attitudes and mannerisms just because they spend so much time together.
Likewise, I’ve been around people who spend a lot of time with God, in prayer and especially studying His Word (the Bible). They become like God. What do I mean by that? They think like he thinks. They love what he loves (people) and hates what he hates (sin). They do what he would do in a given situation. They are filled with the fruits of the Spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.
The Bible says that we are to let God transform us. “Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think.” (Romans 12:2 NLT) God has changed the way I think and I pray that he continues to mold me and transform me as I spend time with him. Time spent with him is never wasted! How will we know what his thoughts are if we don’t read and study his Word? Every day we make choices of how we will spend our time. Let’s give him the time he needs to work in us.
Father, I desire to be more like you and want to spend time with you. Help me to set aside time every day for times of prayer and study. I thank you that as I do this, the Holy Spirit will renew my thoughts and attitudes so I will become more like you. “Since you have heard about Jesus and have learned the truth that comes from him, throw off your old sinful nature and your former way of life, which is corrupted by lust and deception. Instead, let the Spirit renew your thoughts and attitudes. Put on your new nature, created to be like God-truly righteous and holy.” Ephesians 4:17-24 NLT)
