Devotions

Pamela Jones

PamelaAre you like me? Most mornings I get up to get ready for the day and spend at least 20 minutes looking in my closet at the same clothes trying to mix and match clothes with shoes and the right purse. Then I go through the ritual of trying on outfits to make sure it fits exactly right and afterwards, I allow the mirror to tell me if this is the right outfit for my day. Sometimes I’ll try on three different ensembles and pick the one that best fits my mood and my day’s activities. Sounds familiar, right?

There is one outfit that God has given us that is the same for us all no matter the height or size. We can all put it on and it will fit exactly perfect. It’s a one-size-fits-all type of outfit. The Bible tells us in 1 Peter 5:8-9 that we are to “be self-controlled and alert,” because “the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.” It doesn’t matter what we put on for the day; no form of physical clothing will protect us from this enemy. Only the spiritual armor of God can help us be strong and stand against him.

In the Book of Ephesians, Paul tells us that we must, “put on the full armor of God,” if we are to take our “stand against the devil’s schemes.” So within your spiritual wardrobe, you must have “the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Sprit, which is the word of God. And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests.” (Ephesians 6:11, 14-18a).

My physical closet is full of different colors and sizes of clothes, shoes and even purses to help me prepare for the day’s work or activities; but more important is my spiritual closet which must have the armor of God to prepare me for forces that I cannot see without God’s mighty power and strength. Be assured, the lion is coming; but with the right “outfit” and under the protection of the Almighty God, you can defeat the lion. Be prepared. Put on your armor.
